#3 Help the earth, twice: Polish startup introduces biodegradable hot cups with embedded tree seeds

In Poland, a Poznan-based startup has launched biodegradable coffee and tea cups that also contain tree seeds.

The company, dubbed Picup, says its cups are the first for hot beverages that are 100% biodegradable and plantable. The leftover coffee grounds or tea leaves become a natural fertilizer for the heat-resistant seeds. Conventional disposable cups for hot beverages often contain a liner that isn’t recyclable or biodegradable.

The cups are currently available in Poland, but Picups is working to expand into other European markets. “We are making efforts to make these products available in the major food chains and coffee stores, and on major online platforms,” founder Marcin Grzymislawski tells Green Queen.
