2. The Big 14 Biobased Molecules

As this slide from Nathan Danielson of BioCognito explains, 14 biobased molecules are being produced today, thousands of metric tons. The dominant molecule is ethanol owing to the fuel market opportunities, but here are 13 others in the Danielson chart, and some of the volumes are quite impressive. A key factor? All of these excepting ethylene contain oxygen, which is unwanted for drop-in fuels applications but highly prized in, say, the making of organic acids.
