Brazilian sugar mills seen switching to ethanol production temporarily

May 19, 2021 |

In Brazil, Reuters reports that Datagro expects sugar mills will start focusing more on ethanol production temporarily in an effort to supply the market that is seeing record prices. Sugar prices globally have seen the best prices in years, leaving mills to focus on sugar production rather than ethanol but doing so has left a significant supply gap during the crushing season. Anhydrous ethanol prices have momentarily flip-flopped to provide higher returns than sugar, which is supporting the move by mills to switch.
