Canadian researchers find fewer negative impacts on soil microbiology from biodiesel vs. fossil diesel spills

June 15, 2021 |

In Canada, researchers from the University of Saskatchewan have demonstrated that biodiesel spills have fewer negative impacts on soil microbiology compared to fossil diesel spills. The study looked at two different kinds of soil that were contaminated with biodiesel or fossil diesel as well as a control area, looking at nitrogen content, total organic carbon and inorganic carbon. The results showed similar nitrogen results but significantly more TOC in the biodiesel effected soil and significantly more inorganic carbon in the fossil diesel effected soil.
