India’s use of surplus rice for ethanol production a temporary measure

June 15, 2021 |

In India, the Hindu newspaper reports that the government’s controversial policy to use surplus rice for ethanol production has been confirmed by the national food secretary that it is only a temporary measure to ensure blending reaches 8-8.5% this year. Up to 78,000 metric tons of rice is to be used in distilleries that typically produce ethanol from corn but don’t have enough feedstock this season. Only about 13% of the country’s total ethanol production in 2020/21 will come from non-sugarcane feedstocks.
