Circla Nordic debuts, backed by ECCO investment, utilizing Bio2Oil hydrothermal liquefaction technology for biocrude

July 24, 2021 |

In Denmark, ECCO Investment has made a key investment in Bio2Oil technology and a new company has been formed, Circla Nordic, to stress the circular nature/sustainability of the technology. The company has also received notice of a “big national grant to co-fund one of the first two full scale plants.,” according to a source familiar with the company’s progress.

The company has unique hydrothermal liquefaction technology ‘ready to handle the decentralized nature of biomass,’ as the company observes, Specifically Circla Nordic’s technology converts sludge from sewers into a bio-crude, which can be subsequently refined into sustainable fuel for cars, ships, and aircraft. The company says that it aims “ to get 5 to 10 times more energy out as bio-crude than is utilized in the process”. Advanced aspects of the technology package include “minimizing pumping energy, increasing energy recovery, and promoting a more well-defined and efficient conversion process.”
