In India, the Hindu newspaper reports that sugar major EID Parry has kicked off a pilot study looking at how to make potash from the ash waste produced at its distilleries to be used in fertilizer production. Further innovations into waste-based products from sugarcane processing includes those for aquaculture and livestock. Diversification is being driven by lower sugar and ethanol demand due to COVID-19 impacts following the second wave in India. Some mills in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will be mothballed with focus put on those in areas with higher cane productivity in Karnataka.
