Indian sugar diversion to ethanol seen at 3.5M tons in 2021/22

In India, the Press Trust of India reports that due to record diversion of sugarcane and molasses to ethanol production, sugar production for the coming 2021/22 season is expected to fall to 30.5 million metric tons compared to 30 million tons during the current 2020/21 season. While 2 million tons of sugar equivalent was diverted to ethanol during the current season, as much as 3.5 million tons will be diverted in the next season starting in October.
