3B by ’30: Big Moves by Big Players, 9 Key White House SAF Announcements and more

September 9, 2021 |

It was as busy as a mosh pit, as coordinated and fluid as Astaire and Rogers — the penny dropped on what the Unites States of America plans to do about sustainable aviation fuels, with more than a dozen companies and government agencies in the mix, as US airlines agreed to reach 3 billion gallons in SAF deployment by 2030.

In our coverage today:

The 9 Announcements by the White House on targets, $4.3B in R&D spending, $3B in loan guarantees, scale-up by fuel makers, airports supporting SAF fueling, cargo airline investments, accelerate passenger airline adoption, a new Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge, and more.

Chevron, Delta and Google announced a memorandum of understanding to track sustainable aviation fuel test batch emissions data using cloud-based technology.

United and Honeywell announced a joint multimillion-dollar investment in Alder Fuels, which will deploy new technology to converting abundant biomass, such as forest and crop waste, into sustainable low-carbon, drop-in replacement crude oil and upgrade that into SAF at scale.

Chevron and Gevo announced a letter of intent to jointly invest in building and operating one or more new facilities that would process inedible corn to produce SAF, which can lower the lifecycle carbon intensity of fuels used in the aviation industry. The new facilities would also produce proteins and corn oil.

The AFCC called on the Biden Administration to provide at least $20B in immediate new federal loan guarantee authority for SAF manufacturers.

The U.S. Department of Energy announced more than $64 million in funding for 22 projects focused on developing technologies and processes that produce low-cost, low-carbon biofuels. These projects will support the newly-announced Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge: an interagency collaboration between DOE, the U.S. Department of Transportation, and USDA to reduce the cost, enhance the sustainability, and expand the production and use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel.
