First U.S. shipment of containerized DDGS arrives in Tunisia

September 19, 2021 |

In Tunisia, the country received its first shipment of 1,000 metric tons of U.S. distiller’s dried grains with solubles, DDGS, in containers, with U.S. Grains Council staff there to witness its unloading and discuss future sales opportunities. DDGS are the nutrient rich co-product of dry-milled ethanol production.

DDGS utilization as a feed ingredient is well documented as both an energy and a protein supplement. Combined, U.S. ethanol plants possess the capacity to produce more than 15 billion gallons of ethanol and 44 million metric tons of DDGS.

Tunisia typically imports U.S. products in bulk vessels because containers rates are expensive. However, changing freight dynamics created a new opportunity as Tunisia received its first shipment of 1,000 metric tons of U.S. DDGS in containers.
