Coldplay announces “sustainable tour” with bamboo stage, electricity-generating floor

In the United Kingdom, popular rock act Coldplay has announced its upcoming tour will emit half the carbon dioxide emissions as its last outing, thanks to measures that include a bamboo stage, biodegradable glitter and renewable energy. 

“The planet is facing a climate crisis,” Coldplay says in a statement. “So we’ve spent the last two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour’s potential to push things forward. We won’t get everything right, but we’re committed to doing everything we can and sharing what we learn.”

One power source will be the fans themselves via a kinetic floor that generates electricity from crowd movement. A tree will be planted for each ticket sold, and wristbands will be made from compostable materials. The tour route was chosen to reduce the needs for flights, and the band will shell out extra for sustainable aviation fuel. Fans that use sustainable travel methods will receive discounts, and solar panels will be used wherever possible.

The band’s last tour was five years ago. Locations for the upcoming tour include North America, Europe and Brazil.
