Banana suits, biobased evening gowns on display in Amsterdam

November 10, 2021 |

In Amsterdam, an exhibit organized by Fashion for Good is showcasing a fashion future that is both stylish and sustainable thanks to materials innovation.

The “Grow” exhibit, which opened recently, features textile samples made from cotton, kapok fibers, wood pulp, banana fibers and orange peels.

It also includes the results of design partnerships facilitated by Fashion for Good, a sustainable fashion incubator.

For example, using wood pulp-based fabric sourced from Spinnova, designer Frederieke Broekgaarden created tops with knitted sleeves and a billow-y skirt. Eva Sonneveld used a banana fiber textile developed by Green Whisper to make a suit, on which satellite images of banana plantations are printed. Charlotte Bakkenes used a kapok fiber biomaterial made by Flocus to produce a thin evening gown train.

The exhibit runs through April 2022.
