Saucony sneakers swap leather for pineapple alternative

April 25, 2022 |

In London, pineapple leather produced by Ananas Anam will be used in Saucony’s classic Jazz Court RFG sneaker style. According to vegconomist, the material, trade named Piñatex, will be used to substitute all components and overlays that are usually made with leather on the popular design. The sneakers also include hemp laces and plant-based mesh for a more sustainable look and feel.

“Piñatex was born with the loyal support of our many vegan and sustainable fashion brand partners, and has grown through the partnerships with large fashion groups,” Melanie Broyé-Engelkes, CEO of Ananas Anam, recently told the publication. “We are big believers in ‘changing giants from the inside’ to create impact at scale—by defining a joint roadmap to become more and more sustainable together, step by step.”

The move follows a similar collaboration for Nike’s Happy Pineapple Collection, vegconomist notes.
