Europe triples ethanol imports from Brazil

October 20, 2022 |

In the Netherlands, Bloomberg reports Europe is importing vast amounts of cheaper Brazilian ethanol in the face of the ongoing energy crisis brought about by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Ethanol purchases have tripled since July follow the Brazilian government’s policy shift ahead of its elections this fall which in turn forced ethanol prices lower. Cellulosic ethanol in Brazil has seen huge increases in demand due to its lower energy intensity, with Cosan increasing its production capacity by eight-fold by 2024 at three plants and 80% of that fuel is already forward sold.
