Karnataka exploring E85 to keep surplus ethanol supplies at home

November 1, 2022 |

In India, the New Indian Express newspaper reports Karnataka’s state bioenergy development board is working with oil marketing companies regarding the possibility to introduce E85 in the state. The state is home to 28 sugarcane mills who have boosted their ethanol production by 20% in the past six months in order to achieve the 20% blending mandate by 2025. But rather than export much of that fuel to Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka wants to use higher blends at home, such as Maharashtra’s E85 bus trial.

The state government is also discussing with companies about transitioning 100% away from fossil fuels in the next decade and switching to alternative energy sources, including ethanol.
