Virgin Atlantic’s CEO urges UK government to support SAF production

November 23, 2022 |

In the UK, Business Travel News Europe reported that Virgin Atlantic’s CEO Shai Weiss has warned that the UK is in danger of falling behind other countries in the production of sustainable aviation fuels.

The executive urged the UK government to offer more support and incentives to encourage firms to invest in SAF production sites across the country.

“There will be no domestic production [in the UK] before 2025 and UK airlines will be forced to meet their obligations abroad,” Weiss said.

Weiss also said the government should provide clear rules to encourage investment in UK-based SAF plants, including grants and loans from the UK’s Infrastructure Bank.

“I’m fearful that this could be a missed opportunity,” he added. “It’s a big shame that the UK is not using the green revolution to fuel growth. I fear that in 2025 most of the capacity for SAF will be coming from abroad.”
