Brazilian president rejects use of Petrobras’ R5 in biodiesel blending mandate

November 28, 2022 |

In Brazil, Reuters reports the current president of Brazil vetoed the coming National Council for Energy Policy (CNPE) decision that would allow biodiesel produced by “any technological route of production” to be included in the biodiesel blending mandate.

Last week’s decision would have allowed Petrobras Gasóleo R5, a fuel co-processed with vegetable oil in a proportion of 95%-5%, to be used in diesel.

The decision provoked protests in the biodiesel sector, which appealed to the transition team of elected president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and the Mixed Parliamentary Front for Biodiesel, asking for the annulment of the CNPE decision.

Bolsonaro, for his part, has confirmed another decision by the CNPE that would oblige that the biodiesel be a 10% of the blends of diesel in the first quarter of 2023.
