Switzerland’s Monosuisse to use Avantium’s PEF for microfilament yarns

December 12, 2022 |

In Amsterdam, Monosuisse AG, a producer of microfilaments for industrial use, has signed an offtake agreement for Avantium’s biobased polyethylene furanoate. Monosuisse will use the PEF to make monofilament yarns for a range of applications.

“We are impressed by the potential and performance of PEF in monofilament yarns. Beyond its sustainable advantages, such as being 100% plant-based and fully recyclable, PEF is spinnable in the existing spinning lines without any hurdle or further investment,” says Philipp Kohler, Chief Technology Officer at Monosuisse.

The PEF will be produced from furandicarboxylic acid at a plant currently under construction at Delfzijl, the Netherlands.  Avantium expects it to come online in 2024.

PEF can also be used to make packaging, particularly as an alternative to polyethylene terephthalate commonly used in bottling applications.
