EPA says RFS proposal through 2025 could increase GHG emissions in short term before falling

December 19, 2022 |

In Washington, Reuters reports an Environmental Protection Agency internal analysis says the proposed changes to the Renewable Fuel Standard that would increase biofuels blending to 22.68 billion gallons in 2025 would increase greenhouse gas emissions in the short term but they would fall in the longer term. The increased GHG emissions would come from increased tilling for corn, soybeans and other crops, according to the analysis. It said the longer-term GHG emissions reductions from tailpipe emissions would compensate for the initiation increase in emissions, but only if blending didn’t increase after 2025.
