Petrobras carries out first bio-bunkering

January 9, 2023 |

In Brazil, Portos y Mercados reports Petrobras carried out the first bunker filling with renewable content in the country on New Year’s Eve. At the Rio Grande Terminal (Terig), in Rio Grande do Sul, the vessel “Darcy Ribeiro”, from Transpetro, was fueled with the new fuel with a lower carbon footprint, a mixture of 90% in volume of fossil-based bunker fuel and 10% by volume of biodiesel. The objective of the test is to evaluate the use of the bunker with renewable content during two months and the logistical challenges associated with the use of the product.

The renewable fraction of the new fuel has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions relative to the bunker when considered over the full life cycle. The estimated percentage reduction of CO2 equivalent emissions from this mixture is around 7%.
