Italy approves financing to boost biomethane production 10-fold by 2024

January 17, 2023 |

In Italy, the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security has issued a decree approving the application rules for accessing the incentives for the introduction of biomethane into the natural gas network.

The act is one of the actions envisaged to implement the measure of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) which supports the production of biomethane, both through new plants and through the conversion of existing biogas structures.

With the allocation of capital grants for investments and incentive tariffs for the net production of biomethane, for over 1.7 billion euros, it is estimated to promote a production capacity of around 2 billion cubic meters a year by 2024, ten times more than current production. The application rules contained in the decree of 13 January contain, in particular, the public notice schemes for each of the envisaged procedures, the models for participation requests, the documentation to be sent to verify compliance with the requirements, the standard contracts to be stipulated between the national utility GSE and the requesting subjects. The first competitive procedure for accessing the incentives will already be launched in the first quarter of this year.
