Canadian canola growers concerned about Germany’s proposed crop-based biofuels ban

In Canada, the Western Producer magazine reports that Canadian canola growers are concerned about Germany’s move to ban crop-based biofuels by 2030. The European Union is Canada’s second-largest canola importer, coming in just behind China. The imported 2.52 million metric tons of Canadian canola in 2020. Germany is the EU’s largest biodiesel producer, so eliminating the use of Canadian canola as feedstock would hurt the industry, but with more crushing plants coming online in Canada thanks to increased demand for renewable diesel, the blow may not be that bad.
