Finnish universities, companies get involved in the SUSTAFIT research project

February 16, 2023 |

In Finland, Nord News reported that Finnish universities and companies are currently working towards sustainable fiber fabrics in the SUSTAFIT research project. “It is vital to build a comprehensive understanding of sustainable development issues in the nonwovens industry. More public research is needed to increase the use of bio-based and recycled materials,” said Virpi Rämö from Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK). The project examines the sustainability of nonwovens from different perspectives to improve the raw material base, processing paths, circulation and business. The project specifically develops water-repellent and antimicrobial biobased nonwoven fabrics. “The goal is to increase the share of sustainable nonwovens and possibly even identify new uses for sustainable nonwovens,” Rämö states. The project involves a wide range of value chain stakeholders and the purpose is to support them in the development of sustainable nonwovens, their raw materials and production techniques. Industry partners involved in the project include UPM, Fortum, SharpCell, Kemira, Fiber-X, Spinnova, Lixea, Valmet, Nordic Bioproducts Group, Rester, Sulzer, Anpap, NordShield, Lounais-Suomen Jätehuolto, Paptic, JedX Medcare and Mirka. The project is financed by Business Finland, research organizations and industry partners and is expected to last for a two-year period.
