Costa Rica home to new green hydrogen project under development

In Costa Rica, in a new move to expand the development of green hydrogen and its derivatives, the British company Atome Energy recently announced an alliance with the Costa Rican Cavendish, from Grupo Purdy, to establish the National Ammonia Corporation (NAC) in Costa Rica. The company will be jointly owned by both companies and will be based in San José with the goal of developing green ammonia and fertilizer projects in Costa Rica first, before expanding to Central America and the Caribbean. 

Cavendish began its operations in December 2022 and is the renewable energy arm of the Purdy Group, the fourth oldest Toyota dealer in the world and one of the largest companies in Costa Rica. Atome, on the other hand, is incorporated in England and Wales and has green hydrogen and ammonia projects in Iceland and the Villeta mobility project in Paraguay. 

From Atome they cited the 99% penetration of renewable energies in Costa Rica as motivation to promote NAC in the country, in addition to the possibilities of access to international markets by having ports in the Pacific and the Atlantic. Along with that, it has a strong agricultural sector that is one of the main consumers of fertilizers in the world, which until now are 100% imported.
