Cepsa to invest over $1 billion in a new 2G biofuel plant in Spain

March 9, 2023 |

In Spain, energy firm Cepsa said it will build a new second-generation (2G) biofuel plant in Palos de la Frontera, Huelva, which will involve an investment of up to $1.05 million. This new plant, which will be located in the ‘La Rábida’ Energy Park, will produce both renewable diesel and SAF and will mean the creation of up to 1,600 jobs, direct and indirect, during its construction phase. Second generation biofuels will be manufactured from organic waste, such as used cooking oil or agricultural waste, thus promoting the circular economy, Cepsa said. “The construction of this new plant responds to the company’s objective of becoming a benchmark in the energy transition this decade, and leading the manufacture of biofuels in Spain and Portugal, with an annual production of 2.5 million tons, of which that 800,000 tons will be from SAF,” the firm said in a release.
