In Fiji, the Fiji Times newspaper reports that rather than build another sugarcane mill in Rakiraki, the government has decided to build an ethanol plant instead in an effort to boost revenues for the Fiji Sugar Corp. Inspiration from the project came from seeing Indian sugar mills produce ethanol. The government wants to shore up FSC’s finances, so it no longer needs government loans to survive. Ethanol will be produced from both sugarcane juice and molasses.
