Honua Ola Bioenergy’s $520M biomass power plant will not go forward

March 15, 2023 |

In Hawaii, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser newspaper reports that the state’s Supreme Court has put the kibosh on Honua Ola Bioenergy’s $520 million power plant that would burn trees to produce power, agreeing with the Public Utilities Commission’s May 23 decision to reject a proposed power purchase agreement between the company and Hawaiian Electric. The facility was partially built by 2017; at that time the PUC approved the plant. The Life of the Land group further advises that “Life of the Land appealed, the Hawaii Supreme Court upheld the appeal, vacated the decision and remanded the proceeding back to the PUC. The PUC subsequently ruled that the the price was too high due to it emitting more GHG emissions than it would sequester for the first 25 years of operations.”
