Adept Airmotive debuts general aviation engine for biofuels, LPG

September 16, 2010 |

In South Africa, Adept Airmotive has developed and tested the first general aviation engine that can run on a number of fuels including normal unleaded gasoline with octane levels as low as 85 (as opposed to the  US standard of 100), current low lead standard aviation fuel, biofuel and liquid petroleum gas.

The engine was flight tested back in May, using a 320 hp, liquid fueled V-6 engine on a all composite SA Ravin 500.  Richard Shultz, Airmotive MD, stated, “The process of taking a concept, in terms of a biofueled aircraft, and turning it into a reality has opened up huge scope in catering for the environment-friendly and cost-effective demands of new forms of fuel that are coming on stream.”  Adept is currently pursuing certification with EASA, Europe’s version of the FAA.  Nothing was said about attempting to gain certification with the FAA.
