In Malaysia, Sime Darby Plantation and Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding, of Japan, have announced a partnership that will produce cellulosic ethanol from up to 1.25 metric tons of palm fruit waste per day, in a pilot-scale project that will produce an estimated 35-50,000 gallons per year of ethanol on an annualized basis and will be co-located with the Sime Darby’s palm oil facilities at Selangor. The partners will use the pilot project to gather data in support of a potential commercial scale-production facility.
