In Zimbabwe, phase 2 of the Green Fuel project has been launched with another $260 million in investment planned. Expansion will include boosting cane production to 15,000ha from the current 9,600ha and boosting local employment to 7,700 people from the current 5,500 people. Various flex-fuel centers will also be set up around the country.
In India, the Maharashtra state government says that by boosting ethanol production to 10% from the current 5%, sugarcane mills could earn enough to pay farmers INR3,500 per ton of cane, up from INR2,500 per ton now. That estimate is based on achieving 90 liters of ethanol from every ton of cane.
