Germany announces plan to boost momentum behind hydrogen as an alternative to natural gas
In Berlin, Germany has announced plans to boost the momentum behind hydrogen alternatives as part of their broader effort to hasten the pace of emission cuts. The government is preparing for an incentive program that will help develop local markets for hydrogen technology. The “hydrogen strategy’ will focus on both technology push and demand-pull policies in industrial, transport, and heating applications of hydrogen. Germany’s strategy involves the use of blue hydrogen, the not so eco-friendly extraction of hydrogen from natural gas, and green hydrogen, the conversion of wind and solar power to hydrogen via electrolysis. An advisor in Germany’s Economy & Energy Ministry discussed how the technology surrounding hydrogen is seen as an important option to fill the energy gap left from the impending closure of nuclear power stations and the phaseout of coal-fired power.
