ITM Power establishes a 20% concentration of green hydrogen in UK gas network

January 28, 2020 |

In the United Kingdom, ITM Power has announced that the UK’s first piolet project to inject green hydrogen into a gas network to heat homes and business is now fully operational at Keele University. Not only is this the first time hydrogen has been injected into the UK’s gas grid, but the 20% admixture will be the highest concentration injected in all of Europe. The piolet project will be providing this mixture to 100 homes and 30 faculty buildings, and the consumers will experience no change as a result of the hydrogen admixture. If a 20% hydrogen blend was rolled out throughout the country it could save around 6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year, which would be as through the UK took 2.5 million cars off the road.
