Full-Time Bioprocess Engineer

Job Description

BioVeritas is searching for seasoned professionals to assist in the development of its renewable bio-products technology to meet BioVeritas’ strategic objectives. We have an opening for the position of Bioprocess Engineer. This position will consist of providing engineering and support to our fermentation and other upstream operations (centrifugation, filtration, evaporation) at BioVeritas’ pilot plant, and, as the company deploys its technology, participate in translating such knowledge to commercial plants. This position reports to the VP of Process Development.

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Maintain a clean, tidy and, above all, safe work environment
  • Maintain, update and refine Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for each upstream unit operation in BioVeritas integrated pilot plant.
  • Supervise, train, and serve as a resource in conjunction with the operations team for the plant staff when they perform their day-to-day tasks as per the SOPs
  • Maintain and manage data collection such as weights, levels, temperature, pH, date, samples collection.
    1. Ensure data and samples are collected in the right manner and at the right time in coordination with the Plant Manager and Lead Operator, ensuring the operators are following data collection protocols as per the SOPs
    2. Ensure samples are analyzed on a timely manner in coordination with Laboratory Technicians as well as keeping up with lab analytical results QC
    3. Process and analyze all data collected to provide daily or weekly reports as requested
  • Periodically, in collaboration with the technology team, design and perform laboratory analyses or tests, which the laboratory technicians might not be able to perform
  • Ensure pilot plant equipment is operating properly, such as pumps feeding properly and at the correct rate, pH probes well calibrated, temperature being properly measured and heating a cooling system operating adequately. Coordination with the Plant Mechanic and Plant Manager for proper PM and repairs will be necessary to perform this task
  • Be on alert to suggest any needed modifications that would improve or correct the process and aid in the implementation and Management of Change (MOC) necessary once the decision is made to implement any modifications or additions to the process. This will include
    1. Filling up and reviewing the MOC forms with the engineers, which includes many safety aspects of the change
    2. Modifying the applicable P&IDs and undergo a HAZOP analysis if necessary
    3. Taking the lead and coordinating with the SVP of Engineering, VP of Process Engineer, Chief Technology Officer, Plant Manager and Lead Operator to perform the engineering, procurement and implementation of the modification or addition
    4. Writing and/or updating the SOPs and training the personnel, such as operators.
  • Coordinate operations with the downstream operation team to ensure overall adequate operation of the pilot facility as a whole.
  • Other duties as assigned by the company.

Minimum Qualifications


  • BS degree in science or engineering-related field
  • A minimum of five years of experience

Desired but not required:

  • Experience with biomass characterization, fermentation and processing
  • Graduate degree


In addition to the minimum qualifications, the ideal candidate will possess skills and experience in many of the following areas:

  • Experience with process equipment
  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements for workplace safety
  • High level of organization both in the field and work style
  • Ability to work well in a collaborative environment with minimal supervision
  • Hands on; reasonably skilled with basic tools
  • Positive professional attitude; optimistic
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
