In Rwanda, to help make up for the private sector’s slow uptake of biofuel production, the Scientific and Technological Research Institute (IRST) who drafted the country’s biofuel policy in 2008, has recently set up a public-private company called Rwanda Biodiesel Company to kick-start biofuel production. The project includes 122 small oilseed-producing cooperatives, numbering 12,185 members who have planted 923,865 trees reaching 3 million by the end of the year.
