In Iowa, speakers at the TCS 2010 meeting in Ames highlighted significant advances this year on progress and pure research in thermal and catalytic sciences for bio-based products.

The DOE’s Valerie Reed, acting Biomass Program Manager, said that the Administrations goals were to reduce the cost of cellulosic ethanol to $1.76 per gallon by 2012, renewable gasoline to $2.85 by 2017, renewable diesel to $2.84 by 2017, and renewable jet fuel to $2.76 by 2017. Reed also said that the DOE expected to release an “exciting” update to the Billion Ton biomass study this fall.

Among the plenary speakers, Enerkem CTO Esteban Chornet said that the Enerkem projects were aiming to recover 95 gallons per tonne from municipal solid waste and expected its projects to process 29 million tonnes of post-sorted MSW per 100,000 population.
