Cambodia's NTC halts production as low jatropha yields bite

In Cambodia, NTC Jacam Energy’s chairman, Chheuy Sophors stated, “We suspended our biofuel production due to a lack of raw materials [jatropha]. Some farmers who used to grow this crop have stopped.”

After spending US $400,000 to build the facility, and many announcements of expecting to triple output to 2,000 liters per day, or 528 gallons.  NTC Jacam has purchased 500 hectares in Kampong Seu and Koh Kong provinces at a cost of US$50,000, that may be able to supply the 6 metric tonnes of jatropha the plant needs to reach 2,000 ltr/day.  Deputy Chief of the Kampong Speu Provincial Office of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery explained that low crop yields of jatropha in Aural and Samraong districts forced farmers to switch to other crops.
