Baltimore city officials begin testing biofuels in city boilers

December 20, 2010 |

In Maryland, Baltimore city officials have begun tests on the long-term use of renewable biofuels in city boilers. The city’s spending panel recently approved a contract with New Generation Biofuels to begin burn tests at three city facilities. Two Baltimore elementary schools are also running tests.
If the tests are successful, the biodiesel produced from vegetable oil will replace heating oil in city buildings and the city will use a maximum of 440,000 gallons annually. The biodiesel will cost up to $1.32 million, which is lower than the current price of heating oil.
