MXI converting banned alcohol-caffeine products into fuel ethanol

January 7, 2011 |

In Virginia, MXI Environmental Services is producing ethanol by recycling alcohol/caffeine energy drinks that have been banned after a number of deaths.  MXI advertises itself as a recycler, whose website states, “Our ethanol production system receives alcohol solutions and converts them into fuel grade ethanol…”

MXI’s VP of Operations at the Abingdon facility, Brian Potter stated that he anticipates approximately 200 truckloads, each carrying 2,000 cases.  Potter stated that the facility can accommodate four truckloads daily.

Drinks such as Four Loko, Core High Gravity HG, Lemon-Lime Core Spike, Moonshot, Joose and Max have been banned in several cities and states, and there is talk of a federal ban, after health officials became concerned about the impact of caffeine and malt liquor in increasing the risk of unsafe driving, and potential alcohol blackouts.
