Indian groups say subsidized diesel idling biodiesel plants

November 30, 2011 |

In India, two biodiesel plants in Bengal capable of producing 500 metric tons per day have been lying idle for more than a year. The Biodiesel Association of India says that biodiesel doesn’t need subsidies as it is 1 rupee per liter cheaper than diesel but the government continues to subsidize diesel by 16 rupees per liter.

The national biodiesel policy leads to 58 million tons of biodiesel product by 2017 but currently on 1.2 million tons is installed, much of which is idle because there is no roadmap or policy cohesion that allows for sales.
