Florida legislature approves new algal biofuels regulatory oversight

In Florida, the state legislature has passed a bill that would see the Division of Plant Industry becoming involved with regulating algae-based biofuels in order to ensure that algae is safe and won’t be a public liability for cleanup in the case of a leak into the environment. Though it’s not yet clear, companies may have to seek permits from the DPI to operate when growing algae in areas larger than two acres.
