European MEPs split on ILUC vote next Wednesday

September 5, 2013 |

In France, members of European Parliament is split ahead of the vote on indirect Land Use Change on Wednesday in Strasbourg. Two proposals are on the table, one brought by the Industry and Energy committee, ITRE, and the other by the Environmental Committee, ENVI. The ENVI proposal sought to cap first generation biofuels at 5%, but that level is currently being negotiated as high as 6%. Some officials say that cap could go as 7% but industry is pushing for 8% with a real quota for advanced biofuels rather than controversial double and quadruple counting. Industry favors more the ITRE proposal that is expected to better protect existing investments in the European market, but neither the ITRE or the ENVI proposal are favorable for biofuels.
