Boko Haram fueling their war with homemade biofuel

April 18, 2016 |

In Nigeria, Boko Haram is innovating itself out of a fuel crisis by converting peanut oil into biofuel by using salt in order to run their motorbikes used for attacking villages. The peanuts were stolen from farmers and crushed into oil using diesel-powered machines. Before a crack down on supply lines by Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger, a jerrycan of diesel could run up to $350, compared to $13 in larger towns. Young smugglers would take advantage of the high margins to run the fuel to fighters but since aerial attacks on Boko Haram have picked up, the risk is no longer worth the margin.
