In Pennsylvania, corn ethanol has become a hot debate point between the Republican incumbent and Democratic challenger for a contentious Senate race. Both have tried to paint the other as being in favor of big corporations to the detriment of the middle class. Ethanol has become a big sticking point as Philadelphia Energy Solutions looks to layoff employees partly due to RIN compliance costs, a point the Republican is using as proof that ethanol is corporate welfare for agribusinesses while risking Pennsylvania jobs, while the Democrat has been a long-time supporter of ethanol and renewable energy as a while as climate change advisor for a former governor and President Clinton.
