Norled receives first of four biodiesel-powered hybrid ferries

August 24, 2020 |

In Norway, ferry operator Norled has received the first of four new ferries that run on hybrid diesel-battery systems. The vessels will operate using 100% biodiesel, although the idea is the diesel engine runs as a backup to the battery power which are charged when the ships are docked. They were built at the Remontowa shipyard in Poland using technology from SCHOTTEL. The marine industry is looking for ways to fuel their vessels while complying with the International Marine Organization’s 2030 carbon reduction targets.
