Hot 50 2021 – 50 Hottest Companies in Renewable Fuels, Chemicals & Biomaterials

December 30, 2020 |

In Florida, the 2021 50 Hottest Companies in Renewable Fuels, Chemicals & Biomaterials was published today, as voted by invited international Selectors and subscribers of The Daily Digest, the world’s most widely-read bioeconomy daily.

One theme that stood out was deployment at commercial-scale. 9 of the top 10 had reached full commercial-scale, and 38 of the overall Hot 50 have reached commercial-scale or were supporting commercial-scale projects with services.

“After years of waiting, the Advanced Bioeconomy has arrived,” said Digest editor and publisher Jim Lane. “Clearly voters have focused on companies that have proven themselves at scale — in many cases, with multiple commercial plants. When the Hot 50 was first announced back in 2008, every one of these companies were operating these technologies at demonstration or pilot scales, were still on the R&D bench, or had not yet been founded. It’s been an amazing decade of industrial transformation — yet, rapid deployment has yet to begin, and with that a new and significant chapter will unfold in this big story.”

Another theme for 2021 was undoubtedly international expansion — 23 of the Hot 50 this year and 6 of the top 10 are based outside of the United States or have significant international operations and plants.

The annual rankings recognize innovation and achievement in fuel, chemicals, materials, advanced foods, genetics, advanced biological and process engineering and integrated biorefinery development, and were first awarded in 2008. The Hot 50 in Agriculture & Nutrition will be announced in the Daily Digest on December 31st, and the Hot 50 in Biodesign & Engineering will be announced on January 3rd.  The Miami, FL-based Digest serves more than 4.5 million readers, viewers and followers via the web, newsletters and social media.
