Shake Shack is the latest chain to evaluate bioplastic utensils and straws

March 8, 2021 |

In New York, popular burger chain Shake Shack is trialing the use of bioplastic straws and utensils at a handful of its 310 stores.

Nation’s Restaurant News says the biodegradable, polyhydroxybutyrate service ware items are already being used at locations in West Hollywood and Long Beach, California; Madison Square Park and West Village, New York City; and Miami, Florida.

The straws and utensils are produced by Restore Foodware using technology developed by its company Newlight Technologies. Newlight CEO Mark Herrema tells NRN PHB breaks down “just like leaves and stems do.”
