6. The Devils Not in the Details. The Devil’s in heavy-duty

Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Energy for Sustainable Transportation Michael Berube laid down the gauntlet. “Electrify everything” makes no sense because of the “hard to electrify” problem — heavy vehicles, maritime, long-haul trucks.   There’s no message from the DOE that “ethanol’s dead because light duty IC engines are dead”, far from it, Berube took pains to say that ethanol has a key role to play. But you can feel the shift to SAF and heavy-duty, it’s unmistakable. And most of the companies selling technology to ethanol plants have been focused on optimization or co-products, not expansion, for some time.
