From pruning to plate: Indian startup uses apple orchard waste to make single-use tableware

In Himachal, India, a startup is using apple orchard waste to manufacturing biodegradable, single-use tableware such as plates, forks, and knives. 

Specifically, Himjoy Enterprises is using the tons of twigs and branches that come from pruning apple trees to maintain the orchard’s health and productivity. The business was cofounded by Bhanu Uday Singh Kanwar and Devangini Kanwar and operates in Kitkhai, a key region for apple production. 

The process was developed in partnership with CSIR-NIIST, Kerala with a grant from IIT, Mandi. 

“The apple prune waste is generated on annual basis in apple farms, which is burned by the farmers, so we thought of putting it to some use,” Bhanu Kanwar tells Tribune India “The innovation can be helpful for everyone as plastic products are non-biodegradable and have chemicals.”

The company is looking to build its first manufacturing unit.
