Ecowarrior A-lister Leonardo DiCaprio invests in cultured meat

September 27, 2021 |

In Hollywood, actor, activist, and model magnet Leonardo DiCaprio has invested in cultured meat startups Mosa Meat and Aleph Farms.

Mosa Meat, based in the Netherlands, holds the title for world’s first cell cultured burger, which it achieved in 2013. It has since been working to lower its cost and remove divisive ingredient fetal bovine serum from its production process.

Aleph Farms, of Israel, is working on cultured steak, and plans to open a production plant in 2022.

“One of the most impactful ways to combat the climate crisis is to transform our food system,” DiCaprio, who will be listed as an advisor at both firms, said in a press statement.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, cattle accounts for over half of livestock sector emissions.
