Brazilian GMO area doubling to 70,000 hectares in 2022/23

April 7, 2022 |

In Brazil, Reuters reports the Centro de Tecnologia Canavieira expects area planted under GMO sugarcane will double this season, reaching 70,000 hectares. The CTC has developed four varieties of GMO cane but the one currently being planted is resisted to cane borers, pests that cause more than $1 billion in damage to the Brazilian sugar sector annually. Other varieties include those that allow cane to grow on poor soils which would allow expansion of the sugarcane sector overall.
